As an active and educated member of this burgeoning electronic music culture, I find that I am regularly inundated with a wash of undeveloped, soul-less sounds. This culminated earlier today when I came upon an image bearing the caption: “Synthesizers: They used to be for people who knew what they were doing.” Fueled by this painfully honest notion and my insatiable quest to find, share and archive the hidden gems amongst the rough, I present to you: Matteo Milleri and Carmine “Karm” Conte, the DJ and production duo who comprise Tale Of Us.
Currently based in Berlin, Karm and Matteo have recently made their official public debut garnering attention from a series of hot remixes and personal EP releases on Visionquest, Barraca Music and Life and Death. They have an uncanny ability to take a track from its original state, imbue it with a deeper undertone, blur the edges and cultivate an emotional journey all the while honoring the original artistic integrity. This is what soul sounds like.
The 54 minute “Fly Bermuda Podcast” is a smooth yet impulsive, nostalgic yet relevant house mix with a hit of disco and a large dose of sensory stimulation. During my initial listen I found myself repeatedly thinking, “this is the sound I pray for when I’m in a room at 6am and I need a break from the womp.” Flowing into the mix at 23:28 to answer my prayers, is the Tale Of Us remix for “To Let Myself Go” by Norwegian vocalist and songwriter, Ane Brun. Tale of Us takes this already poignant track and bumps the tempo up slightly, spinning it away into an untouchable dream-like state. Their strengths are in the subtleties and seamless construction. After multiple listens, I have come to conclude that this mix, like many of the finer things in life, only appreciates with time. Once you’ve got your fill and are ready for the next step, I urge you to come see what I’m REALLY talking about tonight at Felt where Tale Of Us will be heading the tables alongside Tamer Malki and Sergio Santos. This is a dish best served hot.
